Tomorrow is May 1, the day I have set aside to begin "training to win" the Lake City 50 in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado. It’s not like I’m climbing off the couch to win this race. I’m in decent running shape; I just ran the Salt Lake City marathon(3:50:54) a week and a half ago. Still, I’m no winner. I’ve have not won a race since a regional track meet in 1986--when I was 15-- but I think I can win this one.
In fact, here is the lowdown on the shape that I am in and why I think I can win. I started training for this race at the end of January, only I wasn’t training to win and I couldn’t be disciplined. I signed up for the marathon to give me a more immediate goal and to make me run faster. It worked! I went into the marathon with two goals: 8 min 45 sec miles and to be back to running within four days. I ran 8 minute and 48 second miles and was seen running a painful 1 ½-mile lap around Liberty Park the following Wednesday. That’s the shape I’m in. As for why I think I can win, why not? I’ve never given my all to a race but I feel like if I can harness my strength and my endurance, if I can gather solid information about the sport and come up with a good game plan, and if I can be 100% dedicated and stay focused on that plan, then I think that I can do it. Of course, that’s a lot of ifs for a person with attentional difficulties, general laziness, and the propensity to procrastinate but I am going to give what I have to winning this race. This blog is a part of the game plan...
