Millcreek Tempo Run

Awesome run today. I met Shuan, a guy from Craig’s list and went to run the Milcreek Pipeline trail. We decided to run 50 minutes (out). As it happens, Shaun is in the habit of running 4 to 5 miles so, to him, a 50-minute run was a long run. I was thinking 50 minutes and then turn around, which worked out well in my favor. We started running and I took the lead but when I stopped after a quarter of a mile to pick up dog poop Shaun passed me. For whatever reason I was none to happy to be passed so I passed him back and then pushed it down to about 8 minute miles, after two miles he was still close behind me so I held the pace, imagining him as every person in "the race" who will want to pass me. I also imagined that my legs were wheels spinning in fast circles and I imagined revving up my rpms to 180 per minute, which is recommended. I think it helped; I was able to hold the eight minute miles.
It rained all day so the trail was wet and covered with mud puddles, I ran around and through them, my socks got wet and I got a blister on my big toe. The blister hurt but I kept pushing it, spinning my wheels and revving my engine. The next thing I knew, I was at the overlook (5 miles out), and in record time! After about a mile on the return trip I realized that Shaun was long gone but I did a good job of maintaining my pace and finally feel like I got a real workout. In fact, I'm looking forward to my rest day tomorrow--my legs are sore and my feet hurt. Wah!
